Theo Moorman MBE 1907-1990

Theo Moorman was a dedicated artist weaver with a lifetime of experience. She developed her own individual technique, exploring its potential over a wide range of designs and textural variations. Every piece of work was a new creation and always full of vitality.

As a student of the Central School of Art, London, she concentrated on woven textiles and had valuable experience at Warner & Sons, Braintree and the Ministry of Aircraft Production. After ten stimulating years at the Arts Council, she set up her own studio.

Large commissioned works are to be found in cathedrals and churches throughout Great Britain and the United States. Her greatest output in later years was in weaving wall hangings, mainly designed for private houses.

In the early 1970's she began to respond to many requests for tuition in her weave technique and for an insight into the inspiration and philosophy that lay behind her work. This led to workshops throughout the USA each summer for ten consecutive years, in addition to a number of summer schools in the UK. Her book Weaving as an Art Form was published in 1975.
