Alison Morton (1946–2021) was one of the most dedicated loom weavers of her generation, latterly renowned for her beautiful understated linen cloths and hangings. For the last fourteen years of her life, she was a Trustee of the Theo Moorman Trust for Weavers, a role to which she brought great commitment, as well as invaluable humour and experience. Ruthin Craft Centre, in partnership with the Theo Moorman Trust for Weavers and the support of the Alison Morton Estate, will be presenting a comprehensive exhibition in memory of Alison.
The exhibition will feature a range of Alison’s work from different periods, and in addition will aim to recreate aspects of her studio and working life. To this end both of Alison’s looms and associated equipment will be in the gallery. An exciting photo-essay by Matthew Evans, accompanies the exhibition, as he photographed and documented Alison working on a project.
Ralph Turner, former Crafts Council Director of Exhibitions wrote: ‘Alison Morton’s woven textiles maintain a quiet and fine distinction yet keep within the traditional parameters of the craft. Huckaback, Herringbone and Chenille hand-woven towels form part of this distinguished weaver’s range. Devoid of overt pattern, the weaver’s expression relies on textures, the quality of the making and the natural linens and cottons used. Colours are kept discrete, punctuating the naturally bleached towels with subtly striped borders. The visual impact and appeal of these textiles are evident to anyone who sees them, but their greatest pleasure is derived from their daily use.’
