Alison's Looms
Anyone who went to the beautiful exhibition 'Alison Morton: Weaver' curated by Geoffrey Parsons at the Ruthin Craft Centre early this year, will have seen at first hand the two looms that Alison worked on all her weaving life. They were a 1930s countermarch loom which belonged originally to Ethel Mairet, and a handsome 1970s George Wood dobby loom. Both were displayed in the gallery, threaded and ready to use, which they were by our two weavers in residence, Llio James and Daisy Buckle.
Following the exhibition the Trust has gifted the countermarch loom to Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, a village where Ethel Mairet was part of the artistic community in the early twentieth century. For the dobby loom the Trust invited applications from weavers who would use and benefit from having it. Nine applications were received, and the Trustees were delighted to award the loom to Anna Pritchard, a handweaver working near Bangor in north Wales.
